![]() ![]() ![]() This ends up being the moment where Gon loses his innocence, the first time he properly sees death up close and is a direct result of his actions, or so he thinks. In Gon's eyes, Kite died because he was too distracted by keeping Gon safe. ![]() The reason his death still works is that even if we as an audience aren't impacted by it, Gon is, not necessarily due to grief over the loss of someone close to him, but due to guilt over being too weak to help Kite fight. 8 ORIGINAL: The Yorknew City Arc Many fans debate which arc out of all the Hunter X Hunter stories is their favorite, and the Yorknew City arc is often a popular pick. We have just met Kite a few episodes earlier, and we don't know nearly enough about him. In the anime, however, this plays out differently. In the manga, this scene hits hard because we know how big an impact Kite had on Gon's life, how he was sort of a paternal figure to him, even if he wasn't around throughout the story of the manga. Knowing that they would only be a both interference to him, Killua knocks out Gon and retreats, taking his friend with him. Kite, Gon and his friend Killua all meet one incredibly advanced and powerful ant, named Neferpitou, and she cuts off Kite's arm as he tries to defend a powerless Gon, eventually sacrificing his life to keep the two young boys safe. Knowing that kite is one of the few to be trained and acknowledged by ging is enough for gon to project a ton of ambiguous goodness onto kite, which results in him becoming attached instantly. That arc involves an invasion by a special kind of ant that evolves by mixing its DNA with that of the creatures it eats, eventually turning into an army of hybrids like a koala ant, a lion ant, and more. ![]() Obviously we know this isn’t true and ging is a piece of shit but gon doesn’t know that. Gon is just a kid, he wants to believe that his father is an essentially good guy who left him for a good reason, and the longer he keeps trying and the more bs he has to endure the greater ging has to be in his mind to justify putting gon through all that. Pitou robbed gon of everything he’s been searching for for years in an instant, and it causes all the dark feelings gon has been surprising for the whole series to come flooding out of him uncontrollably. Kite is a top tier narratively important character who is not supposed to die in vain, and then he does. His whole life he’s been waiting for this moment and kite is going to help him. Kite is the only lead gon has in finding him after failing to on greed island. Gon’s entire character motive is attempting to find ging and also understand who ging is and why he left him alone his whole life. But you have to consider that Kite is the single link gon actually has to ging. Now that said, either way it is true that gon barely knew the guy. They tried to make up for this with a flashback but it ultimately feels kinda stilted The anime rushed the early portions of the story to get to the hunter exam faster and as a result left out kite saving gon, finding out he’s ging’s kid and giving gon gings hunter license to return to ging.
